OMAHA (DTN) -- Lean hog prices are facing a surprising shock as markets are responding to the announcement late Wednesday by USDA that African swine fever (ASF) had been found in pigs in the Dominican Republic, the first known finding of the disease among swine in the Western Hemisphere.

After ASF swept through Asia, wrecking the Chinese pork industry, as well as Europe as Germany continues to battle the disease, the finding of ASF in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean is getting a little too close to home.

MT. JULIET, Tenn. (DTN) -- Indiana farmland values hit record highs in June of 2021 with all classes of farmland seeing sharp increases, respondents to a Purdue University survey said. Cash rental rates didn't increase as sharply as land values, and while they're expected to grow in 2021, their growth may be held in check by surging farm input costs and other COVID-19-related headwinds.

LINCOLN, Neb. (DTN) -- Jon Schaben a cattle producer and sale barn owner from Dunlap, Iowa, told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday the disparity between live cattle prices and boxed beef prices is hurting rural America.

"Most recently we see live values of cattle in the $1,500 to $1,700 range but the carcass values -- when they're processed -- in the $2,500 to $2,700 range; a $1,000 difference between what the producers are getting ... and what the end product comes out," he said.

OMAHA (DTN) -- Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.3 million head on July 1, 2021. The inventory was 1% below July 1, 2020.

ANKENY, Iowa (DTN) -- High-oleic soybean acres are expected to increase in the coming years to provide more farmers the chance to cash in on premium opportunities, which can be more than $2 per bushel.

Demand is on the rise for the healthier cooking oil made from high oleic soybeans, according to representatives from Corteva Agriscience and Benson Hill, whose companies sell that oil.
