OMAHA (DTN) -- As the 2021 corn and soybean crops are coming out of the fields, the supply situation for fertilizer and other chemicals is shaping up to make 2022 an expensive year for inputs.

The move by China earlier this week to ban phosphate exports until at least June of next year puts even more pressure on global phosphate trade. The U.S. doesn't buy much phosphate from China, but the country represents about 30% of world trade. Now China's traditional buyers will be looking elsewhere.

ROCKVILLE, Md. (DTN) -- For the first time in many years, corn growers will have a new rootworm mode of action available to them next spring -- a novel trait found in Bayer's SmartStax Pro hybrids.

The trait, which uses a method called RNA-interference (RNAi), couldn't come at a better time, as many farmers in the Corn Belt are facing mounting rootworm resistance to the current Bt traits on the market, said University of Illinois entomologist Joseph Spencer.

LINCOLN, Neb. (DTN) -- The National Pork Producers Council and the American Farm Bureau Federation petitioned the Supreme Court on Monday to consider their challenge to California's Proposition 12, which would ban the sale of pork from hogs that don't meet the state's new production standards.

OMAHA (DTN) -- The nation's corn and soybean harvest pulled ahead of the average pace last week, with 18% of corn harvested compared to the five-year average of 15%, and soybeans 16% harvested, ahead of the five-year average of 13%, as of Sunday, Sept. 26, USDA NASS said in its weekly Crop Progress report on Monday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (DTN) -- Even if agricultural facilities are designed to avoid wastewater discharges, a recent EPA action to rescind Trump-era groundwater guidance could expose farmers and ranchers to Clean Water Act liability.

On Sept. 16, EPA announced it was rescinding a guidance document issued by the Trump administration on Jan. 14, 2021, following a Supreme Court ruling in the case County of Maui v. Hawaii Wildlife Fund.

WASHINGTON (DTN) -- With immigration plans thwarted by the Senate parliamentarian, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow on Wednesday urged members of the United Fresh Produce Association to emphasize the importance of immigration reform when they meet with senators on Capitol Hill this week.

Early in a speech at United Fresh's Washington conference, Stabenow, D-Mich., urged the fruit and vegetable growers to "please be loud" when discussing the importance of immigration reform.
